How to create a surreal scene in Adobe Photoshop
Program: Photoshop CS3 +.
Lead time: 120 minutes.
Create a new 1800 x 1000 px document and fill it with white. Open the “Field” photo. Create a new layer on top of the background layer. Use the Stamp tool to remove cars from the background.
Combine the background and the previous layer. Use the Straight Lasso to isolate the desert from the background. Drag the desert image onto a white canvas using the Move tool.
Go to Layer> New Adjustment Layer> Hue / Saturation and create a Clipping Mask. Reduce Saturation to -84.
To change the field color, use the Color Balance adjustment layer.
To lighten the field a little, add the Curves adjustment layer.
Open the “Sky” photo. Use the Rectangular Area tool to select only the sky and place it over the desert.
Click on the second icon at the bottom of the layers panel to add a vector mask. You can remove rough edges and blur the horizon with a soft black brush.
Create a Color Balance adjustment layer to change the color of the sky.
Cut the plane and place it in the middle of the desert. Use a layer mask to blur the bottom of the plane in the grass.
To remove letters from the plane, create a new layer (select the clipping mask) and use the Stamp tool.
Create a Curves adjustment layer to darken the plane. On the layer mask, use a soft black brush and remove the blackout from the details that are too dark.
Add another Curves adjustment layer to lighten the right side of the plane. Draw areas that you find bright enough.
Create a new layer, change the blending mode to “Overlap” with an opacity of 100%. Fill the layer with gray by 50%:
Use the Dodge and Dodge tools with the Midton range. To improve the combination of color and shadow on the plane, set the “Exposure” to 10-15%. See how I did it.
Our goal is to concentrate the main light on the right and front of the aircraft. Create a new layer under the plane layer. Download the selected area: simultaneously press Ctrl and click on the plane layer icon.
For the selected area, set the color to # 010101 and flip it vertically (Edit> Transform> Flip Vertically). Use the Free Transform tool (Ctrl + T) to rotate the shadow in accordance with the direction of the light.
Lower the opacity of the layer to 60%. Go to Filter> Blur> Gaussian Blur. Set the radius value to 6 pixels:
To soften and reduce the visibility of the shadow, use a layer mask.
Cut a tree from the original background and place it on the crashed plane.
Use a layer mask and a hard brush to remove the bottom of the tree. It should give the impression that the tree grows through a hole in a crashed plane.
Add a small branch to the porthole.
Create shadows for the branches (in the same way as previously created shadows for the plane).
At the top of the large tree layer, create a new layer. Set its blending mode to “Overlap” and the opacity to 100%. Fill the layer with gray at 50%. Use the Dodge tool to lighten the bottom of the branch.
Select all layers with branches and press Ctrl + G to merge them into a group. Change the blending mode to “Normal”, opacity 100% and add the adjustment layer “Hue / Saturation”.
Create an adjustment layer “Color balance” and change the “Tone” to “Midtones”.
To lighten the trees, create a Curves adjustment layer. Draw the edges of the shadow so as not to change them.
Create another Curves adjustment layer and do the same. The highlighted areas in the image below show where to draw on the layer mask.
Cut the model from the original photo and place it on top of the crashed plane.
Create a shadow for it in the same way as previously created shadows for the plane and branches.
To remove the model’s hand, use the Stamp tool. She should look like her hand is hidden in her pocket.
Use the Dodge tool in a new layer to lighten the model.
Create a Curves adjustment layer and lighten the model a bit more.
Add a new adjustment layer “Color balance” and change the tone value to “Light”:
Open the Fish image. Drag the fish using the Move tool. Place them above the main document.
Use the hue / saturation adjustment layer to change the color of the fish.
Lighten the fish using the Curves adjustment layer.
