How to make a person in a photo smiling using the Photoshop filter “Plastic”

For this tutorial we will use the image that I downloaded from Adobe Stock.
Step 1: Convert Background Layer To Smart Object
In the Layers palette we see the image on the background layer:

To make the model smiling, we use the Plastic filter as a smart filter. To do this, you need to convert the background layer to a smart object. Click on the menu icon in the upper right corner of the Layers panel:
Click the menu icon in the Layers panel.
And select “Convert to Smart Object”:
Select the Convert to Smart Object command.
An icon will appear in the lower right corner of the layer thumbnail, informing that the image is now inside the smart object:
The smart object icon will appear.
Step 2: Rename the Smart Object to “Smile”
The name of the smart object has changed from “Background” to “Layer 0”. Before continuing, let us give him a more meaningful name.
Double-click on the name of the layer “Layer 0” to select it:
Double click on the current layer name.
And then change the name to “Smile”. Press Enter (Windows) / Return (Mac) on your keyboard to save it:

Step 3: Select the Plastic Filter
With the smart object selected, go to the “Filter” section and select the “Plastic” item:
Go to Filter> Plastic.
The image will open in the “Plastic” filter dialog box:
Step 4: Enlarge The Model’s Face
On the left side of the dialog box is a tool palette. To zoom in, select the Zoom tool.
Select the Zoom tool.
Click on the model’s face several times to enlarge it. After that, press and hold the Spacebar to temporarily access the Hand tool. Drag the image to center it in the preview area.
Step 5: Select The Face Tool
Select the Face tool in the tool palette. Please note that this tool is only available in Photoshop CC.
Select the Face tool.
Step 6: Drag the mouth bend up
With the Face tool selected, hover over the model’s mouth. Various icons will appear on the screen, each of which will represent different properties of the mouth (upper lip, lower lip, width of the mouth, etc.). Hover over the icon to display a tooltip with the name of the property.
To customize the smile, hover over one of the two smiley icons (curved dashed line on both sides of the mouth). After that, the cursor will turn into a curved double arrow, and “Smile” will appear on the tooltip.

To change the shape of the mouth, click and drag the up arrow:
Drag the arrow up to change the smile.
Using the Smile Slider
There is another way to change the shape of a smile – drag the “Smile” slider in the “Properties” panel, located on the right side of the dialog box. You will find it among other parameters of the mouth in the section “Facial Tummy”. Drag the Smile slider to the right to increase the curvature, or to the left to reduce the curvature:

By dragging the arrow directly on the image or using the “Smile” slider in the “Properties” panel, we create a warm, friendly smile

Comparison of two smiles
To compare the new smile with the original, activate the “Preview” option. You will find this option above the “OK” and “Cancel” buttons in the lower right corner of the dialog box.
