Here are two completed images; one was created in Adobe Photoshop, and the second in Corel Painter:
I think you noticed that the sample created in Photoshop is rougher and more opaque in appearance. While the pattern created in Corel Painter is more manageable, with more pronounced color layers of various elements.
My choice is to have both programs available and use the best of what each of them can offer:
